A small collection of process-related sneak peeks:
The beginning…
A spread from the beginning of my sketchbook.
I think this is what my brain looks like inside…
Ink drawings
A color palette I created for myself to maintain uniformity amongst my prints
and the style they follow.
Experimental paper aging methods
A spread from a really old botany book that was so old it was yellowing, getting mouldy and falling apart.
Various paper staining experiments including tea dying and setting the edges of my paper on fire (!)
Experimental printmaking processes
Intaglio and monotyping.
Polyester plate lithography.
Paper plate lithography.
Digital working
In the digital part of the process working files can quickly accumulate 100’s and 100’s of layers.
Paper preparation and set up
This part is complicated and getting everything just right is crucial.
It is NOT as simple as just putting some paper in a printer and pressing print.
I have to deal with rogue air bubbles, tape and registration issues for each print.
PROBLEMS… oh so many… just a few examples…
Glitches.
Ink everywhere on NUMEROUS occasions!
The aftermath of printing
Soooooo much tape!
Pulling stunts…
Sometimes it takes all kinds of measures to get things just right
—even if it means fixing your deckled edges with a rusty hacksaw.
…Or attacking your prints with a spray bottle and burnishing tools.
More detailed hand-work
Working back in by hand at the end of the process is risky
-one wrong move and I have to start over.
MORE PROBLEMS
Gold leaf splodges and paint leakage.
Trying to figure out titles
…I still don’t have a title.
The aftermath of in-depth research
…The pile of books I just returned to the library.
See Lauren’s previous post on her research process.
